Commitment to Diversity Equity, and Inclusion

Personal Statement

As a Latinx and first generation geoscientist, I understand first-hand the challenges faced by underrepresented minorities in the Geosciences and society writ large. Therefore, I am committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion through my teaching, scholarship, and service. At Wellesley, I aim to design courses to incorporate different social and historical perspectives, and never lose sight of the humanity in geology. As a researcher and advisor, I work to support students form diverse backgrounds through college and beyond.

I am always available to talk with students (at Wellesley and beyond) about issues surrounding DEI, as well as life in general. Please feel free to reach out if you want to chat!

What I’ve done:

Geopath at the University of Wisconsin-Madison: This predominately student-led group has worked to promote DEI at UW-Madison by hosting community tea-times to discuss DEI, hosting scientific speakers from diverse backgrounds, and coordinating workshops to tackle pressing DEI issues (e.g. impostor syndrome).

Christodora: Christodora is a NYC-based non-profit focused on transforming the lives of NYC middle and highschool aged students through experiential environmental education. As an educator with Christodora, I have led backpacking and canoeing trips throughout New England focused on environmental education, and leadership building skills. I have also co-directed Christodora’s summer ecology program hosted at the Yale School of Forestry Camp.

Resources:

The Department of Geosciences at Wellesley College is currently working to develop a webpage with our official statement and DEI resources. This section will be updated once this ready. In the meantime, check out this great collection of resources by the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities.
